Karura Forest from Your Nairobi Neighbourhood: The Practical Guide
How to reach Karura Forest from Westlands, Karen, the airport and everywhere in between, with honest advice on gates, matatus and when to go.

Westlands and Parklands: The Short Hop
From Westlands or Parklands, Karura is your local forest. The most direct route is via Limuru Road to the Main Gate, a drive of 4–6 km that takes 10–20 minutes depending on traffic at the Museum Hill roundabout. Alternatively, enter at the Amani Gate off Prof Wangari Maathai Road (formerly Forest Road) near the Aga Khan Hospital and walk in. Matatu route 23 from Westlands to Kiambu passes the Limuru Road entrance; ask the conductor to drop you at Karura Main Gate. A taxi or ride-hailing app from Westlands costs roughly KES 400–700 depending on surge.
For hotel guests in Westlands, this is the easiest forest access in Nairobi. Book a hotel in Westlands if you plan to visit Karura more than once or want to combine it with the nearby Nairobi National Museum. Skip the idea of driving from Westlands during the 7–9am rush; Limuru Road backs up badly. Afternoon visits are calmer. The Main Gate has ample parking, a café and bike rental, making it the best choice for first-timers.
Karen, Langata and the Southern Suburbs
From Karen or Langata, the drive to Karura's Main Gate is 12–18 km via Ngong Road and the Nairobi Expressway, taking 25–40 minutes outside peak hours. A taxi will cost roughly KES 1,000–1,500. There is no direct matatu; you would need to take a matatu to the city centre (e.g., route 24 from Karen to Kencom) and then another to Limuru Road, which is slow and crowded. If you are staying in Karen for other reasons (Giraffe Centre, Sheldrick Wildlife Trust), treat Karura as a half-day outing and leave by 7am to avoid Ngong Road congestion.
I would not book a Karen hotel specifically for Karura access. The forest is closer to the northern suburbs. However, if you are already in Karen, the drive is manageable. The Kiambu Gate (off Kiambu Road) is an alternative from Karen via the Northern Bypass, but it is less convenient for the main trails. Skip the Southern Bypass route on weekday mornings; it is unpredictable.
CBD, Upper Hill and Kilimani: Public Transport and Quick Taxis
From the CBD or Upper Hill, Karura is 6–9 km north. Matatu route 23 from the Odeon or Koja stage goes to Limuru Road; alight at Karura Main Gate. The fare is around KES 50–100 and the journey takes 20–30 minutes in light traffic. A taxi from the CBD costs roughly KES 500–800. From Kilimani, the drive via James Gichuru Road and Waiyaki Way to Limuru Road takes 20–35 minutes; a taxi is KES 600–900. There is no direct matatu from Kilimani, so plan to take a boda boda to Yaya Centre and then a matatu to the city centre, or simply book a taxi.
For a short trip, staying in Kilimani or Upper Hill is a good compromise: you are near restaurants and the forest is a 20-minute taxi ride. Book a hotel in Kilimani if you want walkable evening options and easy forest access. Avoid the CBD for accommodation unless you have business there; traffic noise and limited hotel choice make it less pleasant for a leisure stay.
Airport Road, Eastlands and Gigiri: Different Gates
From the airport (JKIA) or Eastlands, Karura is a 20–30 km drive via Mombasa Road and the Expressway, taking 30–50 minutes and costing KES 1,500–2,000 by taxi. If you are arriving and want a forest walk before check-in, head to the Main Gate; there is luggage storage at the café. From Gigiri or Runda, the Limuru Road entrance is just 3–4 km away, a 5–10 minute drive. Matatu route 23 also serves Gigiri, so you can hop on from the UN Avenue stage.
For travellers staying in Gigiri (near UN headquarters or Village Market), Karura is a 10-minute drive and makes an ideal morning outing. Book a hotel in Gigiri if you have meetings there and want forest proximity. The Kiambu Gate is closer to Runda but has limited parking; use the Main Gate instead. Skip the forest on weekday evenings; gates close at 6pm and you do not want to be caught in traffic on Limuru Road.
Questions, answered
Do I need a car to visit Karura Forest?
No. Matatu route 23 from the city centre or Westlands passes the Main Gate. Taxis and ride-hailing apps are plentiful and affordable. For other gates, a car or taxi is more practical.
What is the best time of year to visit Karura Forest?
The dry seasons, January–February and June–September, offer the firmest trails. Avoid the long rains in April–May and the short rains in November, when paths become muddy and some activities close.
Which entrance should I use from Westlands?
The Main Gate on Limuru Road is the most convenient, with parking, bike rental and a café. The Amani Gate off Prof Wangari Maathai Road is closer for walkers coming from the Aga Khan Hospital area.
